Access network

How the connection physically reaches the property, and where our responsibility ends.

Access architecture
Dedicated point-to-point fiber from a serving edge facility to the property.Not a shared passive optical split. Upstream capacity beyond the access fiber is still shared.
Optical handoff
BiDi optics: one strand carrying both directions.Which transceivers we support on a customer-owned router depends on the specific route, so we confirm compatibility for your address rather than publishing a general list.
Demarcation
We terminate at a demarcation point on the property. Your network beyond it is yours to design and run.Equipment we lease you stays our property wherever it sits, and a router you bought from us is supported by us even though it is past the demarcation. Ownership follows the equipment schedule, not the wall.

Addressing

Dynamic IPv4 behaviour
Assigned by DHCP where no static address applies.A public address, not carrier-grade NAT. We do not put subscribers behind shared address translation on any tier. Lease duration and how often an address changes are still being set.
IPv6
A stable /48 per subscriber, delivered by DHCPv6 prefix delegation.Stable means the prefix stays yours between sessions, so you can address your own subnets and keep firewall rules that reference them.

Service optics

  • Equipment we supply: Routers we sell are configured and tested before they ship and carry the manufacturer warranty for that model. Wi-Fi access points, additional LAN optics, network cards and switches are separate and quoted before any work happens.

Use of the connection

Inbound connections
Servers, VPNs, home labs and inbound connections are supported. We do not routinely block inbound or outbound ports.Your own router's firewall still decides what is reachable. We can take a proportionate, targeted action against a specific security threat or a legal requirement — that is not a general port block or a hidden cap, and the acceptable-use policy says so.
What we support
The fiber, the demarcation point, and equipment we supplied. Your own router, Wi-Fi and LAN are yours to run.We will help you interpret a wired test result either way.

Why a speed test reads lower

Where the rest of the gigabit goes

The advertised rate is the Ethernet service rate. Some of every packet is header rather than payload, so the useful throughput ceiling sits a little below the line rate — about 94.9% of it under ordinary conditions.

Calculated, not measured. Assumes decimal bits per second, a 1500-byte MTU, IPv4 and TCP without options, full-size frames, no VLAN tag or encapsulation, no packet loss, and endpoints fast enough to keep up. IPv6 headers, TCP options, VLANs, tunnelling, mixed packet sizes and your own equipment all change the result.

Latency

Design target: under 5 ms round-trip to our serving edge. That is the trip to our edge, not to a destination on the internet. What you measure to a particular server depends on the route beyond us and on the server itself.

How to test the connection properly

A number means something when it is measured the right way. Here is how to get one, where the bottleneck usually is, and what to send us if it looks wrong.

Test wired, not over Wi-Fi

Plug straight into the router with a cable. Wi-Fi is a shared radio medium and will rarely show the full figure, especially at 10 Gig and above.

Your port speed is not your internet speed

A 10 Gigabit network port, and the rate your Wi-Fi client reports, are both descriptions of a local link. Neither is a measurement of what you can move across the internet.

One connection rarely fills a fast link

A single download is limited by the far end and by TCP behaviour over distance. Multiple parallel streams to a nearby, well-connected test server give a fairer picture at these speeds.

Where the bottleneck usually is

At 25 and 100 Gig the computer, its network adapter, its storage or the cabling can be the limit rather than the fiber. We will look at a result with you rather than assume which it is.

If a wired test comes back well below what you expect, send it to support with the details and we will look at it with you. We will not tell you a number is fine because the port negotiated at the right rate.
